2022 Conference

University of Bristol, 6-8 September 2022

Conference updates and announcements

Due to room scheduling issues, we’ve adjusted the dates of our 2022 Conference from 7-9 September to 6-8 September. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Conference Registration, required for all participants, is now open.

A draft of our conference programme is now available, as is the full conference booklet.

Travel and lodging

Travel: Bristol has an international airport with bus and taxi connections to the city. However, there are relatively few direct international flights to this airport.

Another way to get to Bristol from abroad is by flying to London Heathrow and taking a National Express bus directly from the terminal to downtown Bristol.

You can also get a train to Bristol Temple Meads, which is about 2km from the venue. All sessions will be held in the Chemistry Building.

Lodging: Conference rates for lodging are available here. The following site includes a number of additional options. Anywhere in the Clifton village area or city centre would be an excellent place to stay.

Accessibility: We will do our best to accommodate accessibility requests, which can be directed to Elle Chilton-Knight, elle.chilton-knight@bristol.ac.uk, by 21 August.

Call for papers

The Society for the Metaphysics of Science (SMS) will be returning to an in person meeting for its 7th Annual Conference, 6 - 8 September 2022 at the University of Bristol, UK.

Our keynote speaker will be Samir Okasha (Bristol).

In addition, Tuomas Tahko (Bristol) will deliver the Presidential Address.

All other sessions will comprise submitted papers. Presentations will be 30 minutes, with 10 minutes reserved for a commentator, a 5 min reply from the speaker, and 15 minutes for Q&A. Submissions should be on a topic in the metaphysics of science broadly construed, of no more than 4,500 words and should include an abstract of 100-150 words and a word count. All papers must employ gender-neutral language and be prepared for anonymous review.

Submissions must be made using the EasyChair submission page.

The submission deadline is 5 April 2022 (midnight UTC). Notifications of acceptance will be delivered by 28 May. Selected speakers should confirm their participation by 28 June.

As well as various presentations, the conference will also feature an organizational meeting of the Society which will elect officers, continue to make various policies, plan future conferences, etc. Both those interested in presenting papers and/or participating in the Society are invited to the conference.
